Walt Disney Elementary School opened in 1972 to serve the western sector of the corporation. The school was one of the first open-space elementaries in the area and has since been remodeled to provide a more enclosed environment.

Walt Disney Elementary School meets the individual needs of students by utilizing multiple avenues of learning such as differentiating curriculum, enrichment and remedial opportunities, Focused Instruction, and Balanced Literacy Programs. The school was designated as a C.L.A.S.S. school in 1992 with an emphasis on integrated instruction, Multiple Intelligences, Brain Compatible Learning, Lifelong Guidelines, and Lifeskills. Walt Disney also has a variety of student services such as Focused Instruction, English as a New Language (ENL), speech, full inclusion for special needs students, full day kindergarten, D.A.R.E. for drug abuse prevention and Title I for students who require remedial assistance, and Structures of Intellect/Bridges Learning Lab.

Honors and Achievements
Walt Disney has been the recipient of many Indiana school improvement awards and grants. On 2001-2002, Walt Disney received an early literacy grant from the state of Indiana. Walt Disney has received state and national recognition for academic competitions including KnowledgeMasters, National Social Studies Olympiad, National Geography Olympiad and Natinal Language Arts Olympiad.
Physical education instructor Steven Govorko was named Penn-Harris-Madison Teacher of the Year in 1996 and the 1997 Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year by the Indiana Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Music instructor Peggy Brilli was named Penn-Harris-Madison Teacher of the Year in 1994. Third grade teacher Krista Noonan was selected as the 2000-2001 WalMart Teacher of the Year. The Disney Dancers performed at the Governor’s Conference on Fitness in the summers of 1996,1997 and 1999 and the National Physical Education Conference in 2000.
Walt Disney works collaboratively with area universities including St. Mary's College, Bethel College and Indiana University South Bend.
The PTO is an active organization supporting parents, students, and teachers through varied programs, activities, and volunteering. Programs sponsored by the PTO provide expanded learning opportunities and a focus on the importance of the family unit.
