Walt Disney Named Among U.S. News 2026 “Best Elementary Schools”
U.S. News and World Report released its “Best Schools” rankings for K-8 public schools by state and Walt Disney is #385 out of Indiana’s 989 public elementary schools!
Data is based on the 2021–2022, 2022–2023 and 2023–2024 school years.
All of P-H-M’s elementary schools are ranked among Indiana’s “Best Elementary Schools”:
- Northpoint #1
- Prairie Vista #2
- Horizon #37
- Mary Frank #39
- Bittersweet #94
- Elm Road #172
- Moran #175
- Elsie Rogers #297
- Madison #273
- Meadow’s Edge #370
- Walt Disney #385
Two of P-H-M’s middle schools were also recognized:
Indiana’s 395 Indiana public high schools were also ranked, and Penn ranked #26.
The U.S. News & World Report analyzed 103,391 pre-K, elementary and middle schools nationwide for their rankings. The rankings use the same methodology for all included grade levels. For each state, schools were assessed on their shares of students who were proficient or above proficient in their mathematics and reading/language arts state assessments. Half of the formula assessed the scores themselves and the other half incorporated the test results in the context of socioeconomic demographics. In other words, the top-ranked schools are all high-achieving and have succeeded at educating all their students. Click here for more information on the methodology.
The highest ranked U.S. public schools in U.S. News & World Report’s 2025-2026 Best High Schools rankings are those whose students demonstrated outstanding outcomes above expectations in math, reading and science state assessments, earned qualifying scores on an array of college-level exams, and graduated in high proportions. They reviewed data on 17,901 public high schools. Click here for more background information on their ranking system.
Get to Know Principal Matt Garber
October is National Principals Month! To celebrate, we’re sharing short Q&As with each of our principals—giving you a glimpse into their leadership style, favorite parts of school life, and what drives their #PHMExcellence every day.
If you could swap places with a student for one day, what class or activity would you be most excited to participate in — and why?
I’ve never worked in a high school setting, and I currently have two high school students at PHS, so I’d be really curious what it would be like to swap places with a student at the high school.
What’s your go-to morning routine (or must-have snack/coffee order) that helps you tackle the day?
Black Coffee first thing every morning!
What were you like as a middle or high school student — and what’s one piece of advice you’d give your younger self?
I was a relatively strong student academically. The advice I would give my younger self would be to build strong work habits and study habits as early on as possible. Those translate to being successful in all areas of life after high school.

If your job as a principal had a theme song, what song would be your walk up song–the one playing when you walked into school each day?
Sweetness – Jimmy Eat World
What was your favorite school lunch or snack when you were a student? What is your favorite school lunch now as a principal?
Favorite school lunch was the old rectangle pizza.
What’s one fun fact about you that most students or staff don’t know?
I have flown an airplane.
Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies outside of school that might surprise people?
I love Notre Dame football.
What’s one thing on your bucket list you still hope to do one day?
Walk the Camino de Santiago.
What’s your favorite school tradition or event?
Staff vs. Students end of year events (basketball, kickball, volleyball).
If you could describe your school in one word, what would it be?
Beautiful

Rockstars Take the Stage at Walt Disney’s Rock Your School Day
Walt Disney Elementary was transformed into a concert venue on Friday, Oct. 3 as students and staff celebrated “Rock Your School” Day with music, creativity, and school spirit.
The celebration began with an all-school assembly in the gymnasium, where students and staff showed up in their best rockstar outfits — from leather jackets and sunglasses to band tees and wild hair. The energy was electric as a live rock band made up of P-H-M staff members took the stage to kick off the event. The group performed three songs, filling the gym with cheers, dancing, clapping, and plenty of air guitar.
The excitement continued with a high-energy performance from the school’s dance group. To top it all off, representatives from each grade level took the stage for a spirited air guitar contest, showing off their best rockstar moves, and judging by the smiles and energy throughout the gym, it was a major hit.
Rock Your School Day has become a beloved tradition at Walt Disney Elementary, bringing the school community together to celebrate creativity, connection, and the joy of learning. Take a look at some of the highlights in the photo gallery below:

Students Team Up to Learn a Lifelong Skill: Tying Shoes
Recently Mr. Steve Govorko partnered with Mrs. Krystal Malone’s kindergarten class and their 5th grade buddies from Mrs. Cornett’s class for a hands-on learning activity with a practical twist — learning how to lace and tie shoes!
To kick things off, Mr. Govorko read the book Tie a Bow, Ben Bunny, which set the stage for the hands-on activity. After storytime, the older students worked one-on-one with their kindergarten buddies, guiding them through the steps of lacing and tying, offering encouragement, and celebrating each small success.
The activity not only gave kindergarteners practice with an important life skill but also allowed 5th graders to shine as leaders and role models.
It was an afternoon filled with teamwork, patience, and plenty of smiles as students of all ages learned and grew together.
Kindergarten Students Explore the Five Senses with an Apple Tasting
Mrs. Ashleigh Heatherly’s kindergarten class at Walt Disney Elementary recently brought science — and snacks — together for a fun, hands-on learning experience.
As part of their lesson on the five senses, students participated in an apple tasting activity, sampling three different types of apples: yellow, green, and red. Together, the class discussed how each of their senses — sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing — helps them learn more about the world around them.
After tasting, students voted for their favorite apple and used the results to practice their math skills through graphing and data collection. The final results were clear: green apples were the class favorite by a wide margin!
Activities like this one make learning interactive and memorable, helping young students connect classroom concepts to real-world experiences — and have a little fun along the way. Take a look at the photo gallery below!
